Remembering Nollywood Icon: A Tribute to Comedy Legend Mr. Ibu

Renowned Nollywood comedy actor, John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, has left a void in the entertainment industry with his recent passing.

Reports confirm that Mr. Ibu departed on Saturday while undergoing medical treatment at a Lagos hospital. The President of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas Ejezie, shared the heartbreaking news on his Instagram, revealing that Mr. Ibu suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. “Mr. Ibu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager of 25 years, Don Single Nwuzor. I announce with deep sense of grief that Mr. Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace,” Ejezie conveyed.

In November 2023, a somber announcement surfaced from Mr. Ibu’s family, revealing that the actor’s leg underwent amputation due to medical necessity. The family disclosed this unfortunate development through a statement on social media, elucidating the series of surgeries Mr. Ibu endured preceding the amputation in a bid to salvage his life. “This development has been hard on us all but we’ve had to accept it as Daddy’s new reality,” the statement expressed.

During this trying period, the family appealed for solidarity and support from Nigerians and fans, acknowledging the delicate state of their father’s health.

Mr. Ibu’s indelible mark in the Nollywood landscape is undeniable, gracing screens with his remarkable performances in numerous films including “Aki and Pawpaw,” “Keziah,” “9 Wives,” and “Mr. Ibu in London.” His comedic genius brought joy to countless audiences, leaving an enduring legacy in the hearts of many.
