Inclusion and equity have emerged as key themes during budget hearings in South Sudan, where representatives of persons with disabilities are advocating for specific funding commitments.
Augustino Wudu Elario told lawmakers that many persons with disabilities remain excluded from mainstream development due to insufficient support. He cited South Sudan’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as a binding commitment to uphold disability rights.
He called for clear budget allocations to fund assistive devices, rehabilitation centers, and economic empowerment initiatives. Government officials acknowledged that no specific budget line currently exists but noted that ministries implement programs benefiting vulnerable populations.
As fiscal discussions continue, the issue of disability inclusion remains under consideration, reflecting wider debates about social protection and national development priorities.
