In the heart of Uganda’s bustling thoroughfares, the Kampala-Masaka highway, a tale of infrastructure vulnerability unfolds. A recent torrential downpour unleashed chaos as a crucial stretch of road between Kyengera and Budo junction gave way to the relentless forces of nature, forming a gaping chasm on a fateful Sunday. This catastrophe, the second of its kind in a mere four months, has cast a shadow over the highway’s resilience.
In response, traffic management swiftly swung into action, rerouting commuters through alternative arteries such as the Nakawuka road leading to Budo junction, or the picturesque routes of Kitemu and Mityana road, offering detours to the Kampala-Masaka Highway. Those journeying from Masaka to Kampala received guidance to navigate through Kitemu or opt for the scenic route via Budo-Nakawuka, or Nsangi-Buloba-Mutyaba road, while Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) remains vigilant, overseeing the evolving situation.
SP Michael Kananura, the traffic and road safety public relations officer, issued a plea for public patience and cooperation as UNRA and Traffic Police teams work tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage. With caution as their watchword, UNRA urged motorists to tread lightly on the fractured roadway, promising swift intervention to mitigate risks and restore safe passage.
“We are closely monitoring the situation at Kyengera, near the Hass Petrol Station area,” UNRA reassured in a solemn statement, urging road users to exercise utmost caution while mobilizing resources to fortify the compromised thoroughfare.
This unsettling recurrence of infrastructure distress mirrors the haunting memory of a similar incident in December 2023, when the Busega-Kyengera segment succumbed to erosion aggravated by rising water levels within the encompassing Lubigi swamp.
