Uganda’s Police Authority: Ensuring Competent Leadership Beyond Speculation

The police have cautioned the public against engaging in speculation regarding the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) or the potential renewal of Mr. Martin Okoth Ochola’s term.

Ochola, who assumed office in 2018 succeeding Gen Kale Kayihura, is due to complete his term on March 4. This has led to public apprehension regarding whether he will continue in the role or if a new appointment will be made.

Speaking to journalists at police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, the Force’s spokesperson, Fred Enanga, issued a warning regarding these speculations. He stated, “The police often receive speculation about the renewal of the IGP’s position or the possibility of a new appointment. We have observed media reports suggesting internal conflicts within the top leadership as they vie for the position.”

Enanga emphasized that such allegations are unfounded, asserting that the position of the IGP is prestigious and requires dedication and political acumen to attain. According to police protocol, the IGP must demonstrate competence in leadership and administration.

“It is not a position subject to lobbying; rather, eligible candidates undergo thorough vetting by the police authority before their names are forwarded to the appointing authority, the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, President Museveni,” Enanga explained.

He urged the public to await the outcome regarding the renewal of the IGP’s term or the appointment of a new individual. “Those who believe they can influence the president’s decision are mistaken. This process falls under the jurisdiction of the police authority, and they are competent in their evaluation. Let us wait until March 4 to ascertain whether the current IGP will continue or if a new appointment will be made,” Enanga concluded.
