Rally Legend Charles Muhangi Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at Fortebet Real Stars Sports Event

The late Charles Muhangi, Uganda’s rally icon, was posthumously honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for September 2024. Muhangi, who tragically passed away in 2018, is celebrated for his 1999 victory in the Africa Rally Championship (ARC)—a record that no other Ugandan has yet matched.

Muhangi’s widow, Petience Muhangi, accepted the award on behalf of the family at a ceremony held at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo on October 8, 2024, marking a heartfelt tribute to a national sporting hero.

Herbert Assimwe Crowned Footballer of the Month

Herbert Assimwe, a dynamic forward for Wakiso Giants, took home the Footballer of the Month award for his standout performances in the Startimes Uganda Premier League. Nicknamed “Camavinga,” Assimwe found the back of the net in every game he played, scoring crucial goals against Mbale Heroes, Brightstars, and bagging a brace against Maroons.

Assimwe’s efforts extended to the Airtel Masaza Cup, where he added two more goals to his tally for Buwekula. His form was unmatched, surpassing fellow nominees Said Mayanja from KCCA FC and Enock Ssebagala from NEC FC.

In his acceptance speech, Assimwe expressed gratitude, stating, “This award is a reflection of the teamwork at Wakiso Giants. I am honored to be here and dedicate this to the Purple Sharks family.”

Boxing: Herbert Matovu Dominates with First-Round Knockout

Herbert Matovu was named Boxer of the Month following his knockout win over Tanzania’s Kheri Mbaruku in the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) regional title bout held at YMCA on September 7, 2024. Matovu delivered a crushing first-round knockout, securing his spot as the top boxer for September.

This victory saw him surpass strong competition from Ukasha Matovu and Owen Kibira, two of Uganda’s leading boxing talents.

Woodball: Isaac Ariho Helps Uganda Prisons Win League Title

In the Woodball category, Isaac Ariho clinched the Player of the Month award, playing a key role in Uganda Prisons’ third consecutive Woodball League championship. Ariho won six out of seven matches, including a commanding 7-0 win over Fred Turyakira and victories against Simon Peter Otim and Delick Ankunda during the final rounds held at Makerere University.

Ariho’s success extended to doubles play, where he teamed up with Abednego Okello and Isaac Nabugere to claim victories over top KIU and KU opponents.
